Privacy
Your information
This is what Wa Zen Modern Japanese Cuisine keeps when you use this website or the Wa Zen app, which is the same site in an app. We only keep what we need to get your food, booking or event right, and we never sell it or use it for advertising.
When you order
Your order is sent to the store on WhatsApp, from your own WhatsApp, when you press Send. That message has what you typed at checkout: your name, your dishes and notes, and for delivery, your address. The store sees your WhatsApp number, as with any chat. WhatsApp’s own privacy policy covers the message on its way.
The website also keeps its own record of each order: the name you gave, the store, collection or delivery, the dishes, the total, the time and the order reference. It does not keep your phone number, your address or your notes.
Bookings and catering
Bookings and catering requests are sent to the store on WhatsApp too. The website keeps your name, the store, the date, the number of guests and, for a booking, the time and the occasion, or for catering, your suburb and what you asked for. It does not keep your phone number or email address.
Your location
Only if you tap “Use my location”, and only once your phone has asked you. To find your nearest store, it stays on your phone. To fill in a delivery address, it is sent to our server, which asks OpenStreetMap’s address service for the street at that spot. Our server remembers the answer for a day, by a rounded position, so a second tap doesn’t ask again; it is not saved with your name or your order.
Notifications in the app
Only in the Wa Zen app, and only if you turn them on. Your phone then gives the app a push address: a random code from Google (on Android) or Apple (on iPhone) that lets us send that phone a notification. We keep that code on our server, with the date it was added and whether it is an Android phone or an iPhone, and nothing else — not your name, number or orders. We use it only to send Wa Zen specials and news, which Google or Apple deliver to your phone.
Turn them off under Your details and the code is deleted from our server at once. If you switch them off in your phone’s settings instead, it is deleted the next time you open the app. If you delete the app, it is deleted once Google or Apple tell us the code no longer works, usually the next time we send a notification.
On your phone
Your basket is kept on your phone until you order. If you choose “Save my details” at checkout, your name, email and past orders are kept on your phone too, so you can order again in one tap. They are never sent to us. Your details has a button to forget them.
The site uses no advertising or tracking cookies, and no analytics. The store map loads its map pictures from OpenStreetMap.
Where it is kept
On our server in Johannesburg, run for us by Fly.io, reached through Cloudflare. Only the people who run the website for Wa Zen can see it.
Seeing, correcting or removing it
Under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) you can ask what we hold about you, have it corrected, or have it deleted. Message or call any Wa Zen store and tell us the order or booking reference if you have it. If you are unhappy with how we handled your information, you can complain to the Information Regulator at inforegulator.org.za.
